On June 1 (today) and Saturday June 2, the A.H. Wilkens auction house in Moss Park will be auctioning off one of the largest collections of Art Deco Noritake in Toronto. Influenced by the Art Deco movement in France, the Noritake factory in Japan began producing porcelain in the late 19th century, inspired by graphic artist Homer Conant. An essential boudoir staple for ladies, pieces were hand-moulded and painted with a high-lustre glaze that added a colourful and feminine touch to rooms. Because the pieces were made to be used and were quite fragile to begin with, few have survived.
The auction will carry the coveted collection of the late Marilyn Derrin who passionately scoured antique shows, auctions and markets across the city and beyond for over 30 years. It includes over a thousand exceptionally well-maintained pieces, like figural dresser jars, portrait plates, powder jars, cigarette boxes, condiment sets and hollowware. Some extremely rare pieces include the Maiden dresser jar (1105) and The Girl in the Red Dress (1158) which are European-influenced figures. Big-time collectors, queens of antiquing and ladies looking to add a feminine touch to their home are expected to come out.
