If you ever needed a reason to do your math homework, here’s one: Integral House, one of Toronto’s best and most architecturally important private residences, is up for sale. The 18,000-square-foot Roxborough Drive property is not currently listed on the Toronto MLS, but a Sotheby’s catalogue says the asking price is $28,000,000. A trio of Sotheby’s realtors will be holding an invite-only preview event at the property this week.
The sprawling modern home, completed in 2009, belonged to mathematician James Stewart, who made a fortune in calculus textbooks before dying of cancer in December 2014. Designed by Toronto architects Brigitte Shim and Howard Sutcliffe, Integral House is renowned for its sinuous, environmentally sensitive design, inspired by the shape of the mathematical integral symbol. It has, among many other amenities, a two-story living room built specifically to accommodate musical performances, with seating for up to 200 people. The gargantuan asking price makes this one of the most expensive properties currently on the market in Toronto. The only home listed on the MLS that even comes close is 68 The Bridle Path, a much less distinguished chateau-style mansion that’s selling for $25 million. Here, some pictures of Integral House’s interior:
The house is designed to hide most of its bulk. There are five storeys, but only two are visible from the front. The rest slope down into a ravine, below eye level.
Maybe Toronto Life is limited with what they can show of the interior, but really? 7 photos for 18,000 square feet? Would have been nice to see more!
I don’t know what the author means by saying ” 68 The Bridle Path, a much less distinguished chateau-style mansion that’s selling for $25 million…”
I may be a simple peasant who cannot afford these homes, but to me, this ‘modern’ home is austere, unwelcoming, cold and unusable, not to mention outdated and stale-looking. The bridle path home, at least, looks ageless and elegant.
If some rich folk want to relive the ( circa ’72) ” late for classes ” ambiance, then this would be the place to do it in.
Overpriced, maybe 5 million max given the photos we seen
Too bad they only showed a few aspects of the house here. It’s truly an original piece of art that has been featured in Architectural Digest internationally. In person nothing is dated or stale-looking about it – in fact most of the detailing is so intricate and expensive it will likely never be replicated. That said it’s not a home to raise kids or outdo the Bridle Path crowd but isn’t there enough of that being REPRODUCED now?
28Mil to live in Toronto? I guess if you have 28Mil to spend, you most likely have other houses around the world.
James Stewart was an original with a vision. His texts were elegant masterpieces on an elegant subject if you ever had the privilege of reading one. Integral House is a testament to his love for the subject and how it intersected our daily lives. May it be enjoyed by many.
pretty sure that kinda money could buy a much more attractive home in Beverly Hills for example, that is crazy!
