The history

The owners believe this house, built in 1917, was the first on the street. It was originally intended as a cottage. (Before the Gardiner, it was lakefront property.)

Big selling point

The sun-drenched living room in the front of the home, with its huge bookshelves, wood ceiling and hardwood floors, seems like a good place to enjoy a book or three:

Possible deal breaker

With only two bedrooms on the main floor (plus a basement apartment with one bedroom), there isn’t a ton of room for a large family. But a detached house in west Toronto for less than $800,000 is so rare that it might be worth putting off a second child for.

• $799,000 • $3,976.48 in taxes (2016) • 2 bedrooms (plus a basement apartment) • 2 fireplaces • 1 bathroom (plus another in the basement apartment) • 1-car garage
