House of the Week: $2.4 million for an Orangeville home with a wine cellar that was once a jail

Location: Orangeville Price: $2,399,000 Last sold for: $580,000 in 2021 Size: 3,700 square feet Bedrooms: 3+1 Bathrooms: 4 Real estate agent: Shawna McFadyen, Royal LePage RCR Realty

The place

A three-plus-one-bedroom, four-bathroom home in downtown Orangeville. The place has 10-foot ceilings throughout, two laundry rooms and an elevator connecting everything. It’s close to shops, restaurants and parks, and Collingwood is less than an hour’s drive away.

The history

Built in the early 1900s, this property is one of Orangeville’s first houses and the former office of the sheriff. The current owners, a couple, purchased it in 2021 and spent just over two years making upgrades, including a three-storey addition to the rear of the home. During demolition, they discovered many quirks, like the sheriff’s original jail cell, which is now the wine cellar.

The tour

From the street, it looks like a quaint suburban bungalow, featuring three of the original walls.

But the back of the home is something else entirely: a huge modern extension with plenty of windows, a deck and a garage that leads to a mudroom.
