99 Sudbury may become a 26-storey condo hotel
99 Sudbury, the former glass factory just east of the train tracks near Queen and Dufferin, has a weird history. In the past decade or so, it has housed an after-hours club, a film studio, an art gallery, an oyster bar and an MMA school. This year, the multi-purpose event space began hosting the Toronto Underground Market. Now, it looks like another change is in the works, and this one’s a biggie.
A zoning application dated March 31, 2014 sets out a proposal to redevelop the site as a “26-storey mixed-use building” containing 157 hotel suites, 209 residential units (spread out over 20 storeys) and a large subterranean parking lot. The application also mentions an “event space” and “ancillary retail,” but no details are provided about how those aspects of the development would compare to the site’s current facilities.
The owner of 99 Sudbury, Marco Petrucci, didn’t have much to say about the proposal. “It is an exciting project. I can comment on it in 3-4 months,” he wrote us in an emailed statement. Of course, before anything happens, the zoning application will need to be approved. For anyone who’d like to share their two cents, a community meeting is scheduled to take place tonight, May 29, in The Lounge at 99 Sudbury.
