Flavour of the Year 2012: A Movable Feast

This year, a fleet of new trucks raised street food standards in the GTA. Trouble is, they’re always on the move. Here, the top 10 and their Twitter handles (so you’ll never miss another taco, burger or brownie).

BLUE DONKEY STREATERY @bluedonkeytruck Greek junk food, straight up: calamari pitas ($6), chicken gyros doused with ouzo-jacked mayo ($6) and feta poutine ($4.50).
BONFIRE CATERING @bonfirecatering A wood-burning oven on wheels turns out thin-crust pizzas—soft, chewy, charred—with toppings like bacon jam and fior di latte ($12).
THUNDERING THELMA @caplanskytruck Zane Caplansky’s smoked meat sandwiches ($7), plus other greasy glories, like barbecue brisket sliders ($7 for two) and bacon-maple doughnuts ($3 for three).
CUPCAKE DINER @cupcakediner Thirty-odd kinds of freshly baked cupcakes piled high with ruffled frosting. Our favourites: the caramel apple pie and the banana peanut butter cup ($2.75).

EL GASTRONOMO VAGABUNDO @elgastronomo Gourmet tacos in a variety of styles, like the Moroccan version with lamb tajine and harissa, or the Thai special with coconut curried pork ($8 for two).
FOOD CABBIE @foodcabbie American street food at its trashy best: hand-formed sirloin burgers ($5), bean and chorizo burritos ($6) and cheddar-smothered Philly cheesesteaks ($6).
GORILLA CHEESE @gorilla_cheese Grilled cheese made to order in fancy combinations like aged cheddar with bacon, green apple and maple syrup on multi-grain ($7.50).
SMOKES’S POUTINERIE @poutinerie A dozen or so variations on our favourite artery clogger, including one with bacon, sausage and pulled pork for the truly committed oinkivore ($10).

TOASTED TANGERINE @toastedtangerin Artisanal sandwiches like a strawberry-glazed pork shoulder with mango-jalapeño coleslaw on a soft ciabatta bun ($8).
SWEETNESS BAKERY @bakerysweetness All manner of sugar rushes: brownie-based cupcakes ($3), lemon meringue tarts ($3.50) and dulce de leche shortbread squares ($2.75).
