Sour beer may sound off-putting, but discriminating beer geeks know better: the specialty ales, which get their characteristic tartness from exposure to wild yeast and bacteria, have been gaining popularity in recent years—so much so that some beer enthusiasts have claimed September 14 as Sour Beer Day. In Toronto, the festivities take place at Bar Volo’s annual We Live for the Funk event, which famed Belgian brewery Cantillon has selected (along with 46 other bars around the world) to serve a single keg of Zwanze 2013, a highly coveted one-off sour beer. The official afternoon tasting is sold out, but admission to the evening event gets you a limited-edition wineglass, samples of 30 different sour brews from Ontario and Quebec breweries like Amsterdam, Bellwoods, Indie Ale House, Hopfenstark and Les Trois Mousquetaires, and, if you’re lucky, a leftover soupçon of the famous Belgian ale.

We Live for the Funk, Sept. 14, 7 p.m., Bar Volo, 587 Yonge St., guestlistapp.com
