Who provides the female voices that announce TTC stops, and how do they know they’re at the right stop?—Matt English, North York

To facilitate its new automated stop announcements, the TTC equipped its fleet with GPS monitors connected to a TTC stop database. Regardless of the time between stops, the vehicle will always know where it is, and, unlike distracted drivers, will never forget to call out a stop. The project was all very in-house: the pre-recorded voices belong to TTC employees Susan Bigioni (subway) and Cheryl Bome (buses and streetcars). And the system itself was developed by a TTC employee. In the future, GPS technology could lead to other computerized conveniences, like displays in bus shelters to show when the next bus is coming. If only there were a tech-savvy way to predict future strikes.
