Treadwell is moving to Niagara-on-the-Lake
Port Dalhousie farm-to-table institution Treadwell will be decamping for Niagara-on-the-Lake this June. Sommelier James Treadwell, who co-owns the restaurant along with his father, chef Stephen Treadwell, told us that the move will allow them to design the space they’ve always wanted (for Stephen, that means an open kitchen, and for James, new wine fridges). Although the new dining room will actually be smaller (40 seats compared with their current 90), Treadwell 2.0 will make up for it with a large patio and private dining space. The restaurant will continue to operate at its current location until early June, and the new location, at 114 Queen Street, should open a couple weeks later.
I had a terrific meal there several years ago, and while the dining room’s design was a bit staid, the location next to the water was lovely. Hopefully the new restaurant is sited on an equally appealing spot.
Wow – we went to Treadwell’s Farm to Table for lunch with high expectations as the web site and menu looked so wonderful. We were blown away by the freshness and quality of the meal. We had a roasted red pepper soup with a hint of chili oli on it and a dollop of key lime fromage sorbet in it – absolutely sublime. Lunch was so impressive that we asked if they could fit us in for dinner! We had a reservation somewhere else that we cancelled and after a matinee show , we went back for dinner. And if we thought lunch was great – dinner was even more spectacular. One of our appetizers was a tomato salad that the tomatoes had been picked that morning and were slightly roasted with some wonderful oils and a Percorino cheese from a local supplier. Mains were so inviting that we each ordered something different and switched plates half way . The atmosphere is inviting – not snobby at all – we’ll be back!
