Tim Hortons adds new extra-large cup, outguns Starbucks

In news that’s already sending shock waves across the nation, Tim Hortons announced today that it’s introducing a new, larger coffee size: the mammoth, 24-ounce extra large, which will appear in stores January 23. To accommodate the new name, the old 20-ounce extra large has been renamed large, the old 14-ounce large is now a medium, the old 10-ounce medium is now small and the old eight-ounce small is extra small. If this is a cash grab, it’s not a blatant one: consumers will pay the same price for the same amount of coffee (e.g. a new small will cost what an old medium used to cost). No word yet on retaliatory measures from Starbucks, whose puny 20-ounce venti has now been definitively outclassed (and no, its trenta doesn’t count; it’s only for cold drinks).
What’s an ounce? When did Tim go American in Canada? FYI its millilitres.
I have no idea what ounces are either.
For the two above, 1 ounce is about 30 mL.
I think it was just an easier way to put the price up without telling anyone. My extra large coffee was ($1.90)today i paid over ($2.00+change).I thought the price stayed the same & you got more for your money.
Free PR for Tim Horton’s….someone at Head Office is smart OR ……NOT!…..They should have just ADDED an Extra-Extra Large. Lame…and most people I know are pissed and confused. Come on Tim Horton’s! You do good business anyway, so why the confusing screw-up?
I won’t be running to my local Tims for 750Ml of dishwater anytime soon. Have to ask Why? Who? I’m flabbergasted.
@Tigger – they didn’t put the price up. Your extra large that cost more today was 4 ounces bigger than the old Extra Large size. If you wanted to pay the same amount for the same size, you just had to order a large.
I agreed with Jenn… there is no price increase at all.
All price are same at all size (it is just size name change that’s all) got it, people???
I order new extra large 24-ounce (710ml almost 1 litre)
I paid exactly $2.00 perfectly included tax.
It is easy.. just bring $2 coin for 24-oz extra large (it is included tax). 24oz still cheap to me for $2 included tax.
That is in Ontario.
I don’t understand why people are confusing.. it is same size.. it is just change name size that’s all and price is same.. if you want same price.. you can ask for same price.. for example.. if you always order large coffee (you will need to order medium because it is new name for that same size.. that’s all.. you don’t need to be bigger brain to figure out…
one more thing.. the new extra large 24-oz is new price since it is new cup and bigger cup so yes it is only 1 cup is new price.. but all old sizes (S, M, L and old x-large) are same price in new name sizes that’s all.. no need confusing.
Tims – get with the times and start serving soy milk. Then you will have even more customers.
DONT USE SOY MILK…THATS NASTY!!I WILL NEVER BUY…
Actually, they didn’t beat Starbucks. Starbucks has “Trenta” which holds 31oz. I don’t see the point in not including it, it’s still one of their sizes, even if it’s just for cold drinks.
And Tims and Starbucks have always used fluid ounces for their drinks. Even in Canada. You people should know this.
