Over a million Tassimo machines recalled for spraying hot water

Canadians who like their cuppa joe produced through futuristic robotic labour will be upset to learn that nearly a million Tassimo coffee makers are being recalled in Canada, as well as about 800,000 units in the U.S. In case you’ve never used a Tassimo, the machines uses “T Discs”—small containers filled by one of the partner brands with coffee grinds, tea leaves or other stuff—to make single servings of hot beverages. Tattooed baristas might hate them for their prepackaged, pre-ground coffee; armchair environmentalists might direct their scorn at the packaging that goes in the trash with every cup. But the latest round of haters is more likely objecting to the burns they can cause. According to the Toronto Star, in the U.S. there have been 140 reports of the machines “dousing people” with scalding water. In 37 of those cases, the victims suffered second-degree burns. Apparently, the discs can explode during the brewing process, spraying hot water on the unlucky brewer—or, in one case, a two-year-old girl. Full details of the recall are available on the Tassimo website. If indeed this is the beginning of the robot uprising, it seems it will be well caffeinated. Read the entire story [Toronto Star] »
Just like Stella Liebeck, the woman who sued McDonald’s after she got splashed with hot coffee, I hope this frivolous recall leads to stronger protections of businesses from consumers who expect the Nanny state to take care of them. Face it, sometimes ya get burned!
I own a Tassimo and love the coffee it produces. I did have an exploding disc once, but I didn’t even think to blame the disc or the machine, I just thought I had not lined up the disc properly and forced the top down. After cleaning up the machine and the counter, I went back to enjoying my beloved morning brew. Nobody is taking my Tassimo away from me, and all the idiots who want the company sued and the product removed forever should get a life.
Hey True Tony – if think the hot coffee case against McD’s was a frivolous, you should probably read something (anything) about the case before you opine about it. This is a good place for you to start http://www.lectlaw.com/files/cur78.htm
I researched these and found them to be over-hyped, over-engineered and environmentally dubious. Instead, I bought a little Vienetta stovetop pot that makes fantastic coffee!
I have learn a few just right stuff here. Definitely price bookmarking for revisiting. I wonder how a lot attempt you put to create this sort of fantastic informative website.
