Possibly coming soon to a food cart near you: prepackaged nuts

Toronto’s street food crusaders are gearing up for another municipal vote next week, but it won’t involve gourmet grilled cheese or tacos. On July 11, city council will vote on taking baby steps away from the current hot dog homogeny by introducing a few new items to what existing carts can sell: prepackaged cut fruits and vegetables; whole fruits and vegetables including corn on the cob; prepackaged salads, nuts and seeds; soups; pre-cooked veggie burgers; coffee and tea. Seeds and prepackaged salads are nice and all, but let’s face it—that’s not terribly ambitious considering the masses are clamouring for food trucks. The licensing and standards committee, bowing to the concerns of restaurateurs, decided to send the question of expanding truck vending options to a working group for more study, with a report due in November (currently, trucks selling out of public lots downtown are in a confusing legal limbo). All of which means that Torontonians shouldn’t expect a flotilla of trucks roaming the streets this summer. [Toronto Star]
