Som Tum Jinda, the wildly popular Michelin-recommended Thai spot at Church and Gerrard, owned by Wassawan “Earth” Chansopa and Phanom “Patrick” Suksaen, has opened a new location at the edge of Kensington Market, in the former home of Caplansky’s Deli.

According to the restaurant’s Instagram feed, the new space, done up in bold patterns and vibrant colours that channel Thai lanterns, is open for business as of yesterday.
While the new outpost is still in its soft-open stage, close to 80 per cent of the northeastern Thai menu from the original location will eventually be available: punchy, spicy (and they really mean it) Isan-influenced plates with deeply fermented funky flavours. “This is a new neighbourhood, so we are testing out things at this point. Some may stay and some may go. Time will tell,” says Suksaen.
Think dishes like nam khao tod, crispy rice tossed with sour pork, peanut, onion, ginger, coriander and chili; tub waan, a pork liver salad brightened with cilantro, garlic, chili and mint; or the classic som tum tod, a fried papaya salad topped with peanut, garlic, chili, tomato, dried shrimp and green bean.

While the east-end and Fairview Mall STJ locations skip booze altogether, the Kensington Market spot is serving up cocktails. Inspired by tropical Thai fruits, the drink list leans island time: sour mango margaritas, a blush-pink riff on a G&T made with Empress gin and a splash of guava juice, and the brand’s Thai milk tea take on the espresso martini.
