Introducing: Rhum Corner, The Black Hoof’s new Haitian spin-off

Name: Rhum Corner Contact Info: 926 Dundas St. W., 647-346-9356, rhumcorner.com
Neighbourhood: Trinity Bellwoods Owners: Jen Agg, who owns The Black Hoof next door and Hoof Cocktail Bar across the street, and husband Roland Jean
Executive chef: Black Hoof chef Jesse Grasso

The Food: Haitian street food, including empanada-style cod patties and fritters made out of malanga, a taro-like tuber. For mains, snapper and braised goat come with rice, fried plantains and a spicy fermented cabbage called picklese.

The Drinks: Lots and lots of rum. Slushie machines churn out boozy piña coladas and daiquiris. More serious tipplers can pay $48 for a half-bottle of Haitian rum and bottles of Mexican Coca-Cola, which purists claim tastes better than the North American variety.

The Place: Jean, who hails from Haiti, used to host impromptu island parties at Cocktail Bar—that’s how he and Agg came up with the concept for Rhum Corner. Their new digs come equipped with flashy neon signage, a tropical-themed mural and—most importantly—an LCBO’s worth of rum.

The Numbers: • 40-plus bottles of rum behind the bar • $12 for the most expensive item on the menu: red snapper with shrimp • 1 wall-sized mural of a naked sunbather • 1 unisex washroom decorated with sexy pin-ups • 0 reservations
