Batch of Neilson milk recalled due to cleaning solution contamination (yikes!)

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency sent out an alert this morning warning people not to drink Neilson Trutaste 2% microfiltered partly skimmed milk, specifically the kind sold in four-litre bags with the UPC code 066800 00404 4, best-before date February 12 and best-before code 1590 FE12 H7. Saputo Inc. of Montreal decided to recall the milk, on shelves in Ontario and Quebec, after learning that some of it was contaminated with a cleaning solution. So far, one person has become sick after drinking the milk, but the Star reports that they didn’t require a hospital stay and have since recovered. In a slightly unsettling twist, the solution-laced milk can cause nausea and vomiting, even though it looks and smells normal. So keep your eyes peeled for those bewildering codes. Buy Beatrice Milk.
My family has been sick this week and we had that milk. CFIA to investigate!
I had the same problem with sealtest milk. Nothing wrong with it but mades me sick after drinking.
I give my children this milk when my mother told me about poison cleaner being in it that made me sick!! If anything ever happened to my children!! There would be a big!!! Issue this disgusts me and how someone probly poured it in maybe they should be looking over the people who are working there how can we trust anyone with our food or drinks if this happens
I was wondering why all of us were getting sick in the house!
I only buy this milk no other, I just dumped the rest down the sink, and now I think I will go to Mac`s and buy one of the jugs they sell
I’m 7 months pregnant , and i had 2 glasses of milk yesterday and felt nauseated all day and felt really sick . this is INSANE!!!
My husband came home from work sick tonight.
We were watching the news and heard the report
about the milk recall. I just purchased that milk
on the 24th and the tab read 1590 FE22
What about Neilson Skim milk my code is 1590 on my bag dated Febuary 5th, the code is the same on the plastic tag,
I just purchased 4 4litre bags today because they were on sale. However the code reads 1590 due date Feb 26. I hope this batch is ok. Very scary considering I am due this Sunday and have children that drink milk. We haven’t opened this batch yet…..not sure now whether to try it???
I called the company and asked the name of the cleaning solution — it was sodium hydroxide in a dilluted form — but to me that is still scary even though dilluted! I have their 3.25% which they claim has been tested and not affected but I still don’t trust that company now so am tossing it and going to get Sealtest!
Is the company going to reimburse us? This is the very first time we bought this milk and this happens. My boyfriend came home sick and missed 2 days wages.
I wouldn’t take any chances with any of Neilsons milk products, I myself have 2 children and I just got rid of the milk but I kept the bag and tag on it. On top of that it was skim milk, not 2% regardless I’m not taking any chances and will be changing to Beatrice milk from now on. They say 80,000 liters effected that is roughly 21,000 bags if milk and who knowes if it has effected the 1%, skim, and 3.25% ! There hasn’t been any reports yet this far, but again I as a mom will not take the chance.
Seriously? Your kids and husband are throwing up so it must be the milk? There is a stomach flu going around which is more than likely causing your family’s issues. My son and husband were sick with vomiting and diarreah 2 weeks ago–it was a nasty virus, but it passes. Relax.
Just got off the phone with Saputo Inc…she said it’s only that date feb 12; all UPC codes will be the same; so it’s the date that’s important. she also said that if feeling sick since we drank it to consult our doctor.
I bought the 1% neilson milk from NO Frill, I thought I was safe. The news said was the 2%. I had a glass before I went to bed. within couple hours. I had diarreah I am Nelson fan, do not know which milk company to trust now.
I did check the bag afterward. It had the code 1590 too.
so do we get a refund? or something?
I have this bag of milk!!! exact codes and date..do I take it back to the store and get my money back? I have not opened it yet..thank heavens!!
I hope nowone gets sick
i hate neilson
First of all Sandy, January 28th – you clearly work for the company and you are not fooling anyone.
Secondly, I am 99 percent sure I was seriously poisoned by this milk, but NOT form a 4 liter bag, from a 1 liter box of 1perent. I know its not a flu because I had some, got sick the next day, recovered – then had two big bowls of cereal and then was absolutely bed-ridden – I mean exorcist styles the second time around – common denominator, milk. Now I haven’t had my box tested yet, but if I find that my box is contaminated and neither Nelisons nor the CFIA did anything to mitigate the damage (they claim no other milk is affected) I am going to sue the %$# out of both of them.
If an elderly person or child got as sick as me, a healthy 29 year old man, no doubt they would be dead. My father is a physician and that is his professional opinion. Oh and Sandy, if you had anything to do with the two days of hell I just spent in bed, you’re going to wish you drank the whole carton when I see you in court b!t$h
Just had some chocolate milk in the one little carton, and it tasted as thou there was something on it. Definatley didn’t taste as it should!!
I had 12 cups of that milk in a day I love milk now I’m home sick
With pains and nausea thanks nelson
I am so unsure of what to think about my milk now It is not the type that is being named in the recall, but that code and date are the same. It is 1% as thats all my household drinks. Is it known if the normal 1% milk might have been affected, or only truetaste?
Never buying this kind of milk again sounds like over reacting. How many companies have recalls in a year? Do you stop buying a vehicle type if they have had a recall? Do you make your children stay in the house all the time because of the sun having the ability to cause cancer? The company has had a mishap and has taken proper per-cautions to ensure the safety of the public.
Count yourselves lucky that we have The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and this problem has been found in a relative short time! Yes, some people may have become sick which I agree is not a good situation.
Take notice that it’s only one particular expiry day therefore the problem was solved quickly at the factory, within a day. Milk processing equipment needs to be cleaned on a regular basis and cleaning agents are used to do this and circulated inside the equipment.
Imagine if you lived in China where it took many months in 2008 to discover that they had melamine contamination in their MILK and hundreds got sick with various ailments including many children and the problem showed up again in 2009 and 2010 to a lesser extent. I was there at the time and you could not trust ANY milk product processed inside the country.
I bring this up as I think this situation here in Canada has been handled properly and our Canadian companies are not ashamed to admit a problem and take an active part in a recall. Nothing is 100% sheltered from mistakes in the food processing industry as we all know from regular recalls such as this. Just return the product, count yourself lucky there is recall to tell you not to consume it and move on.
i did not go to work jan 26 27 and today.still getting over the trots and feeling a little sick.in the afternoon of my second day home sick i read about milk recall and went to fridge, sure enough i had that milk in my fridge-half gone mainly by me. i am the only one feeling ill. could be the milk, could be a bug but im the only one not feeling right.cfia came and took remainder of my milk for testing but first bag was already taken away by trash.
MY WIFE . MY SON AND ME HAVE BEEN SICK BECAUSE OF THIS MILK.I NEVER COMPLAIN. THIS HAS BEEN AWFULL..I -E-MAILED SAPUTO.THEY E-MAILED BACK .~WE ARE SORRY~ THAT`S IT. CALLING LAWYERS ! AND IT IS NOT THE FLU BEEN AT THE DOCTORS.POSTED THIS TO LET OTHERS KNOW THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONE IT HAPPENED AN IS REAL !
You people need to relax, all food is handled by people, this happens occasionally. They didnt do it on purpose, no need to freak out and swear to never buy the brand again!!! It has been a reliable company, and they recalled on their own!!! Honestly, there is the flu going around that will make you much more ill than this !!! To blame it all on a bag of milk is ludicrous!
@Irene – you posted previously as Sandy – everyone knows you work for the company. Use as many exclamation marks as you want we all know you are a pathetic shill!!!!
My son got sick with the vomiting and diarrhea … every time he drank milk he threw up more … the milk isn’t the one in question and the doctor in emergency said, I quote: “Don’t drink milk when you have the flu … you will be even sicker as they don’t mix”. To have even a mild case of flu and then drink milk will make you sick and there is a lot of it going around. Ask a doctor.
My son doesn’t buy TruTaste but I do myself and will continue to do so as their products are good. I have seen this same kind of thing happen before with other milk brands so this isn’t something unusual. Things happen. Be thankful that the company told us about it … they could have been like some unethical companies and said nothing at all …
Neilson 2 litre milk packaging extremely difficult…many others have the same difficulty. Do something about it or I and others will buy another from someone else.
