In preparation for David Chang’s impending takeover of Toronto next year, we’re taking a first look at Lucky Peach, the print and iPad publication he’s launching in June. The new quarterly food journal is a collaboration between Chang, Zero Point Zero Production (of Anothony Bourdain: No Reservations fame), writer Peter Meehan and hipster-lit publishing mainstay McSweeney’s, which has just posted some excerpts from the first issue. The focus, unsurprisingly, is ramen.
Amid colourful graphic novel–style drawings of various noodle luminaries, Lucky Peach Issue 1 will include reports from Meehan and Chang of their travels through Japan, Tennessee and Spain; a piece by Anthony Bourdain on three cinematic depictions of ramen (including the Brittany Murphy flick Ramen Girl); recipes from Chang and WD-50’s Wylie Dufresne; and an explanation of ramen-induced MSG headaches from Harold McGee, the man behind On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen.
The issue will be available on June 14 at a cost of $10, first on the iPad (with additional features like two hours’ worth of video) and then in regular old print. We can’t wait to get our hands on a copy.
