Synergy is becoming something of a trend among Canadian writers. Douglas Coupland launched his clothing collection with Roots earlier this month, and now Balzac’s Coffee has partnered with Margaret Atwood to create the Atwood Blend: fair-trade and organic coffee at $15.50 for 450 grams. From the sale of each bag, $1.25 will be donated to the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and the Pelee Island Bird Observatory.

Atwood is a well-known bird enthusiast, having written a children’s book called For the Birds two decades ago to teach kids about environmentalism. More recently, she wrote a save-the-birds piece in The Guardian in January.

It’s kind of a relief that she decided to take the coffee route instead of expanding the robotics division of Atwood Corp. We all know how that’ll turn out.
