$67,500 —The average amount paid by the LCBO in salaries and benefits to each of its 6,067 employees in 2012, according to a recent report by the C.D. Howe Institute, a Canadian public-policy think tank. The report’s authors claim, among other things, that the LCBO’s “quasi-monopoly” on provincial liquor sales creates a disincentive to curb costs. They conclude that the gradual liberalization of alcohol sales in Ontario would lead to lower prices for consumers and increased revenue for the government.
