Kanga brings its meat pies to a new shop in the downtown core
In January, we wrote about Kanga Aussie Meat Pies, a fledgling Toronto food business that had turned to Kickstarter to raise funds for its standalone downtown pie shop. Owners Megan Chan and Erynn Mayes said they planned to have a place leased and open for business by springtime, which seemed like an ambitious timeline. It turns out they weren’t kidding. Chan and Maye recently took to Twitter to post this picture of their new storefront at 65 Duncan Street, near Queen and University—a convenient location for cubicle-dwellers looking to switch up their usual lunchtime salad bowls and Starbucks wraps.
Kanga specializes in miniature savoury pies stuffed with things like stewed beef (per Australian tradition) and butter chicken. The business made its debut at the Toronto Underground Market in 2012 and eventually earned shelf space at high-end specialty food stores, like Hot Oven on Roncey and Sanagan’s in Kensington. The new shop, which opens in early May, will sell an expanded inventory of savoury pastries, including sausage and spinach rolls and party-sized pies, plus espresso coffee by new local roaster Propellor.
