On July 1, all-Canadian chain Mandarin will be celebrating its 35th anniversary (and the 147th anniversary of the enactment of the British North America Act, 1867) by inviting people to its 22 Ontario locations to enjoy a free buffet meal. Not all people, though: only those who can rustle up a Canadian birth certificate, passport or citizenship card will be invited to partake in the complimentary feast—which, as any Mandarin fan knows, may include soup, salad, pizza, sushi, grilled meat, pie, cotton candy, Chinese food and, in all probability, a case of binge-induced gut rot. The feeding frenzy begins at noon, although lineups will likely form much, much earlier.

July 1, 12-8:30. FREE. Various locations, mandarinrestaurant.com
