
Every Toronto foodie who has had St. Catharines’ Michelin-recommended restaurant Fat Rabbit on their notes app for two years (raising hand) but doesn’t have a car to make the trek out of town will finally have the chance to try chef Zach Smith’s food. He’s blazing into Toronto for one night only to host a collaboration dinner with 1 Kitchen’s chef R. J. Fortes on November 29, and we will be seated.

Smith’s barely two-year-old restaurant slash butcher shop, hidden in plain sight at the intersection of Geneva and St. Paul streets in the Garden City, has been racking up buzz for its bold menu that showcases local ingredients and lesser-known cuts of meat.

The Rabbit Comes to Town at 1 Kitchen is promising a five-course prix-fixe full of “heart, hustle and harvest” (though no actual heart, which we wouldn’t put past this fan of sustainable whole-animal butchery). Dishes will include lamb tartare with plum mostarda and pickles, Ontario rabbit croquette with baby gem salad, and a chestnut honey financier with mascarpone mousse and espresso pearls for dessert.

There are two seatings available—one at 6 p.m. and one at 8 p.m.—and it costs $120 per person. Guests can also add an optional wine pairing curated by Stratus Vineyards for an additional $30. Not a bad deal when you consider that mains at Fat Rabbit run in the $50-a-plate zone, with meat cuts reaching $76. Also, Torontonians are saving the cost of gas for the 110-kilometre drive they’d typically have to make there (not to mention back).
But don’t count on dropping in on a whim: spots are limited, and we suspect they’ll get snapped up. Hop like a bunny and reserve here.
