Toronto’s crackdown on backyard chickens is headed to the big screen (in a short film)

Last year, when city council was debating whether to join the growing list of cities that allow homeowners to raise chickens in their backyards for eggs, we brought you a look at nine members of Toronto’s backyard chicken underground who hid their faces but proudly told us about the special bond between man and bird. Council quashed the motion to permit the chickens back in January, but now, a new short film called Crackdown is bringing the issue back into the spotlight. Or at least that’s the plan. Red Gecko Productions, the team behind the movie, is soliciting crowdfunding through Indiegogo, the same site Ashley Jacot De Boinod used to help launch Glory Hole Doughnuts. The top fundraiser perk—a dinner cooked at your house by Chantecler’s Jacob Wharton-Shukster—is already claimed, but the group is still $5,000 short of its goal.
