Cookstown Greens goes up for sale after 22 years
Cookstown Greens, the pioneering supplier of specialty produce to top Toronto restaurants, is up for sale. Founded in 1988 by former restaurateur and food columnist David Cohlmeyer, the farm built its reputation on its rare and organically grown produce. Now, after 22 successful years, Cohlmeyer has put the 95-acre property and business up for sale for $1.2 million, and is hoping to sell it as a going concern.
We spoke with Cohlmeyer earlier today, who told us that selling Cookstown Greens is just a part of growing older—he turned 65 last year—and wishing to reduce business responsibilities so he can explore his other interests. What other interests? Well, Cohlmeyer says he wants to write a book about growing quality food, and hopes to work toward removing the legal impediments that face small-scale farms, especially those regarding animal husbandry. He also wants a chance to explore creative hobbies that he sometimes neglected when running a full-time farm, such as photography and music (he’s played the cello since high school).
With the farm listed back in October, Cohlmeyer says there are a number of interested parties but no firm offers as of yet. The $1.2-million price tag includes all buildings (greenhouses and living quarters), farm equipment, permits, an irrigation system and business contacts, alongside Cookstown Greens’ well-respected name.
