I’ve always treated facials like massages: an occasional indulgence. I book one before a wedding, after a stressful stretch at work or when my skin is looking tired. I leave glowing, promise myself I’ll come back more often, then promptly forget about it until the next special occasion.
Then I visited TOULA to experience their 50-minute Signature Facial, and I left thinking differently about how to actually improve my skin with a preventive approach. Tucked into a King West storefront at the corner of Richmond St. W. and Portland, TOULA feels less like a med spa than a thoughtfully designed oasis. The space features soft curves, warm natural materials and treatment rooms called coves. It’s quiet without feeling hushed and luxurious without being intimidating.

It quickly became clear that TOULA wasn’t treating the facial as a one-time indulgence. The entire experience was built around empowering clients to learn how to properly care for their skin with more relevant insights.
The first stop wasn’t the treatment room. Unlike every other facial I’d had, this one didn’t begin with a skin analysis done by the naked eye. Instead, it began with specialized facial-scanning technology known as multispectral imaging, which analyzes pores, elasticity, pigmentation, hydration and UV damage using high-resolution imaging. Unlike a standard skin assessment, it captures what’s happening beneath the surface, detecting damage and early signs of aging that aren’t yet visible to the naked eye. Minutes later, I was looking at what felt like a report card for my face.
As someone who loves data, it was refreshing to see it all laid out before me. My hydration and skin barrier were in good shape, while my pores and wrinkles measured better than average for my age. That genuinely surprised me. The less impressive scores were from damage harder to see with the naked eye.

The scan flagged significant UV damage and pigmentation beneath the surface, along with early signs that my skin’s elasticity was beginning to decline. None of it was alarming, but it explained why my complexion looks duller than it did a few years ago.
Iana Dodson, TOULA’s lead esthetician, celebrated what my skin was already doing well before discussing what we could improve. Every recommendation came back to what the scan was actually showing us, not a product on the shelf. For the first time, skin care felt less like buying another serum and more like understanding the road map my skin was already laying out.
By the time I reached the treatment room, I understood my skin. Now it was time to treat it. After evaluating the results of my skin analysis, Iana recommended a customized 50-minute Hydrating Facial, which included a double cleanse, gentle microdermabrasion, lymphatic drainage, microcurrent and ultrasound, and concluded with a relaxing massage that targeted my face, neck and décolletage area.

Despite its compact footprint, TOULA feels surprisingly spacious, with fully private treatment rooms. The attention to comfort continued throughout the facial. The heated bed, impossibly soft blanket and calm explanations made it the first med spa I’d visited where I didn’t have to choose between relaxation and results.
Medical-grade products left my reactive skin calm, while lymphatic drainage subtly defined my jawline and cheekbones. I’ve had great facials before, but this was the first one that felt genuinely luxurious without ever feeling overly clinical. The treatment concluded with multi-colour LED light therapy to stimulate collagen production, a calming final step selected to complement my skin’s specific needs.

The facial may have been over, but the appointment wasn’t. Using my skin analysis results as a guide, which are also conveniently emailed afterward, my practitioner mapped out an at-home skin care routine and treatment plan on a detailed prescription pad. For me, that meant maintaining hydration and protecting against UV damage, with such treatments as DermaPen 4 or wrinkle relaxers as future options if my goals evolved.
When the facial ended, no one tried to sell me anything. Instead, I walked away with a personalized road map that prioritized gradual, natural-looking improvements over dramatic change.
After my visit, I found myself thinking differently about what consistent skin care actually looks like. It’s not just about booking a facial when your skin is acting up. TOULA’s membership model makes consistency feel simple. Members contribute monthly toward treatments and skin care while unlocking preferred pricing and other perks, with six-month FaceX reassessments to track progress over time. It’s a model built around TOULA’s core belief that prevention is key, consistency drives lasting change, and results should enhance rather than alter. New members receive a complimentary express facial and a three-session LED light therapy package added to their account, and can even share their monthly facial credit with someone close to them.
Having visited on a weekday morning, I found my overall experience to be the kind of self-care ritual that’s surprisingly easy to fit into a workday. I walked into TOULA expecting a facial. I left understanding why the clinic treats skin care as an ongoing practice instead of an occasional indulgence.
