Russian literature isn’t exactly sunny, and stars of Anna Karenina dressed suitably drab for the premiere at the Elgin Theatre last night. Keira Knightley’s sheer black dress was a dark departure from the peachy number she wore at the London premiere, and Jude Law and Matthew Macfadyen matched their duds with the somber themes of the classic novel. (Check out Laws stubble. Its screams, “I’m brooding over the hypocrisies of aristocratic society.”) The film is directed by Knightley super-fan Joe Wright, who worked with the British actress on Atonement and Pride and Prejudice. Anna Karenina might not be as Oscar bait-y an adaptation—but the film’s fancy sets, lavish costumes and nod to serious lit are still sure to generate Academy chatter.
