Russell Peters, Rob Lowe making Indian–Canadian hockey movie set in Brampton

Russell Peters, Rob Lowe making Indian–Canadian hockey movie set in Brampton

The film is called Breakaway, and it’s being produced by Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar (perhaps best known to North American audiences from the film Singh Is Kinng). From what we gather, the movie is a cross-cultural immigration comedy about a Sikh family in Canada (enter hockey). Shooting started in Toronto this week, which is why Rob Lowe is in town, according to Shinan Govani. Kumar has also convinced Russell Peters to both star in and co-produce the film along with his brother,

Clayton Peters.

“I grew up in Brampton, where Breakaway is set, and I know the characters in this movie first-hand,” Peters told Thaindian News. “This is a great story about an Indian kid with a dream to do his own thing, something I know a thing or two about.” A little-known Toronto actor, Vinay Virmani, will be in the lead. From the sounds of it, this puck flick will fare better than TIFF’s opening flop, Score: A Hockey Musical.
