I like sports. I like non-fiction movies, based on true stories and stuff like that…But I like history too and the wars and all that.
–Rob Ford, dishing on his cinematic preferences after sashaying down the red carpet outside the TIFF Bell Lightbox yesterday. The mayor didn’t attend any festival screenings, though he does plan on catching a showing of Smurfs 2. His favourite film? American Gangster, a tale of mobsters, hard drugs and municipal corruption. Huh. [National Post]
He is exactly why we need someone who is more sophisticated. A lot of the general public might be able to related to Rob Ford, but I don’t think a “regular guy” should be mayor of a city like Toronto. The problem with Toronto is that anyone who is more (for the lack of a better term) “polished” is seen as too “elite” (do we remember the 2003 municipal elections?). What was a little bit hypocritical was that David Miller, while more “reflective” of the general public, went to boarding school. I’m surprised that people didn’t dig that on him. His alma mater costs about $50K a year in 2013 for boarders (day is about $30K).
