If I were to ever fly in space again, I want to fly with Sandra.
–Chris Hadfield, the now-retired Canadian astronaut and social media phenom who spent 144 days being awesome aboard the International Space Station last year, weighed in at the post-screening Q&A for Alfonso Cuarón’s space disaster flick Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Hadfield went on to remark that, fortunately, the five months he spent in space “went way calmer.” [Toronto Star]
That’s what he wanted, to become a celebrity. It was evident from his space shows.
Are you suggesting that with a negative connotation? He’s a celebrity because of a combination of a talent for communication and a passion for science. I also dont think he did what he does to become a celebrity. Most scientists cant force their way to that status. WE made him a celebrity. He would have continued doing his thing in obscurity either way.
Well said… The man is one of an extremely select group of humans who have earned their place in our history for exploring the last frontier. I’m neutral on the celebrity subject, but I think having him as a guest for this screening is not only appropriate for his accomplishments (even though he’s the real mccoy and is clearly leaps and bounds – no pun intended – beyond the performers who made the movie in real life experience), his appearance continues to promote a positive message to kids, and the world about our participation in the space program. I think his status as a figure in history goes beyond celebrity.
