In reality television, high-stakes knife work and the sweaty chaos of a cook-off make for riveting viewing. Not surprising, then, that some of Canada’s most hyped reality imports have been culinary showdowns like Top Chef, now in its third season, and Chopped, which is slated to air in 2014. Next to join the lineup is Masterchef, the show where Gordon Ramsay terrorizes skittish amateurs while looking deeply offended by the fact that they are not, in fact, professional chefs. Producers for the Canadian edition, which will air next year, are holding an open casting call for contestants at the InterContinental Hotel on Front Street this weekend and are asking hopefuls to bring one fully prepped, show-stopping dish to be sampled by a team of professional tasters. If the show’s U.S. counterpart is an indication, contestants who make it on TV can expect to be mocked, berated, reduced to tears”/] and possibly much worse.

Masterchef Auditions, August 10 and 11, 7 a.m., InterContinental Hotel, 225 Front St., CTV.ca/MasterChefCanada
