O Canada: the country gets its first porn channel

Let’s face it—the nation hasn’t been the same since Citytv stopped airing those Baby Blue movies on Friday nights. Fortunately, on October 28, the Vanessa channel will be launching in Quebec (it’ll be in French! Ooh la la!), making it the first porn channel in Canada. Its English counterpart is set to come on the airwaves late next year. After all, where else would one find porn? The Internet? Please.

Of course, since we’re talking about Canadian airwaves, the CRTC says Vanessa must air at least 20 per cent Canadian content, so expect at least two out of every 10 genitals to be homegrown. For a monthly fee of $14.95, the channel promises erotic-themed dramas, documentaries, reality shows (I Love Money reruns?), and variety and magazine shows (Who Wants to Slam a Millionaire? The Inside-her? Enter-taint-ment Tonight? Sextra?). Reuters also reports that the soft-core stuff will be aired in HD (we’re not sure if that’s a good thing or not).

In other television news, Canwest is launching the Reality Channel on Canada Day, and from the looks of it, there are just as many opportunities for semi-nudity with Survivor, Project Runway Canada, The Real Housewives and Fear Factor on the clock. Porn and reality television 24 hours a day, seven days a week: mankind’s greatest achievement since the Snuggie.
