Awards season may be over, but the (soon to come) warm weather marks another cause for celebration: music festival season. Canada hosts its fair share of festivals—Osheaga in Montreal, the one-off but decidedly epic Pemberton Festival in B.C.—but we care most about Toronto’s own North by Northeast, which just announced a second wave of bands for its 17th edition, taking place at various locations around the city from June 13 to 19.
Montreal-based indie rockers Stars, ’90s rap group The Pharcyde, pop-punk group The Descendents and New Wave legends Devo join the already packed lineup that includes The Dodos, Twin Shadow, Deerhoof and fellow Canadian bands such as Braids, PS I Love You, The Luyas, Chad VanGaalen and Dirty Beaches.
It seems Yonge-Dundas Square is the venue of choice for NXNE headlining acts, with Stars, The Descendents and The Pharcyde all scheduled to take the stage at the downtown locale. But the double billing we’re most excited about? The one-two punch of Devo and Men Without Hats. We’ll have to make time for a pre-concert stretch to ensure that we’re in top form to both do the safety dance and whip it, whip it good.
