David Suzuki, Jay Baruchel and Fubar II: TIFF’s CanCon lineup
TIFF co-directors Piers Handling and Cameron Bailey announced this year’s Canadian lineup yesterday to a room of film industry and media types noshing on little plates of poutine at the Royal York. Among the 858 Canadian films submitted for consideration, 72 were selected to screen at the 35th film festival.
Among the films that got our attention are a documentary on the country’s most beloved environmentalist, David Suzuki, called Forces of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie. There’s also the highly anticipated sequel to the 2002 cult flick Fubar, set to have its world premiere at the opening night of Midnight Madness (we look forward to mullets and jorts at the gala). Jay Baruchel, Hollywood’s 2010 version of Shia LaBeouf, is teaming up once again with Trotsky director Jacob Tierney in a serial killer flick called Good Neighbours, which is set in Montreal during the Quebec referendum in 1995. Xavier Dolan, a fast-rising director from Quebec, is bringing his second film, Les amours imaginaires (Heartbeats)—it won the Regards Jeune prize at Cannes this year. Other big names set to appear onscreen include Jill Hennessey, Scott Speedman, Don McKellar, Jennifer Beals and Harvey Keitel.
