Will amfAR’s Cinema Against AIDS gala be TIFF 2011’s splashiest affair?
The Toronto International Film Festival is, of course, about selling movies and watching them, but another component is the star-studded parties—the booze-and-schmooze fests that occur when the lights go down. This year, the Foundation for AIDS Research and Dignitas International have partnered again for the amfAR Cinema Against Aids gala at the Carlu, and the guest list for the Sept. 11 event is likely to be more star-studded than a special-presentation red carpet. The amfAR site confirms that self-proclaimed D-list comedian Kathy Griffin is confirmed to host the event, and Kim Cattrall will be chairing the affair with designer Kenneth Cole, Dignitas co-founder Dr. James Orbinski, vice-president of sales for Johnson and Johnson Mary Van Praag and producer Vincent Roberti.
Recording artist and actor John Legend is set to perform at the event for celebrity A-listers and guests who will include Ralph Fiennes and Emmanuelle Chriqui, and we’ve been told there’s a good chance past Cinema Against Aids event chairs will commit to attending Toronto’s gala this year, including Madonna, Harvey Weinstein, President Bill Clinton, Sir Elton John, Demi Moore, Martin Sheen, Quentin Tarantino, Giorgio Armani, Carine Roitfeld and Sharon Stone (no official word on who has confirmed). Also, we can expect to see a number of the names from the amfAR host committee, including Lloyd and Marie Barbara, Derek Blasberg, Measha Brueggergosman, Brad Goreski, Nicholas Mellamphy, Linda Spalding and Michael Ondaatje, Belinda Stronach and many more. In case all of those boldface names aren’t enough, there’s a reasonably good chance we’ll see Colin Farrell. It doesn’t get much splashier than that, unless of course Barack Obama shows up (we’re under the impression he will not).
