Why don’t more people use the water to get around? Because, until now, it hasn’t really been an option.

Earlier this month, Waterfront Toronto launched an east–west water shuttle for the summer, with stops at the Portland Slip, the foot of Yonge and the new Ookwemin Minising island at the mouth of the Don River. The boats, which are roughly the same size as the island water taxis, depart hourly, with added frequency during peak periods. A trip across the inner harbour takes about 30 minutes and costs $15.

If the pilot is successful, it could be the first step in fulfilling a long-term city dream: a rapid aquatic transit network of sea buses that could deliver us from gridlock on the Gardiner.
