Video: Mary Walsh calls Rob Ford a “big, loud-mouthed, bombastic buffoon,” then tells him to “chillax”
In an interview with Zoomer Media today, This Hour Has 22 Minutes Mary Walsh offers her thoughts—and a lot of zingers—on Rob Ford’s overreaction to getting ambushed by Marg Delahunty, her 22 Minutes alter-ego. At one point, Walsh compares Delahunty to Ford, describing them both as “big, loud-mouthed, bombastic buffoons” (really, she just thinks it would be nice if the simpatico personalities became friends, and that’s why Delahunty showed up at Ford’s home). She also offered a few words of wisdom for the mayor: namely, “chillax.” Of course, you should watch the video in full for yourself.
These people of the press think they’re above the common law. I’d like to see Mary Walsh try that stunt in the United States. (That is come on to someone’s private property and refuse to leave when told to.) Down there the home owner has the right to shoot you dead. You can’t do that here but I believe you have the right to use physical force (or sic your German Shepherd on them). I think Ford was dying to do just that (I would too) but he took the more politically correct route and called 911.
Warning to Mary Walsh: Don’t come onto my property. I have a German Shepherd who while friendly to most people, is absolutely intolerant of uninvited guests.
Mary Walsh is simply not getting it, she messed up big time. Who does she think she is? An an important, respected person simply because she works for CBC?
Well what she is, is someone that invaded a Canadian Mayor’s private space in an obscene display of arrogant entitlement?
Just because she thinks she can or wants to does not make what she did okay and to make snotty little digs as she does here simply proves that she really is all the things that she say about others. To sum it up, BULLY!
Well sweetpea, you ain’t in America. The politico “ambush” is part and parcel of the Canadian identity. It’s called public office for a reason. As far as calling 911 being the politically correct route you are wrong. He did that in a feeble attempt to use his authority as Mayor to get someone else to deal with the situation and with the hope of garnering sympathy by claiming to be under attack.
A word of warning to you Mr. Long. Setting your german shepherd on an unarmed person – btw obvious plastic swords don’t count as being armed – will land you in a whole world of trouble whether or not you ask someone to leave your property. Furthermore, it’s not your dog who is intolerant.
You seem to relish the idea of being able to shoot people if they are on your property. Why don’t you pack up and move south. Your type is definitely not needed nor wanted here.
I really think coming to someone’s home is a bit to far. I have seen 22 minutes and I have never seen them come to someone’s home before. And dressing up as xena come on the show has not been on the air for over 10 years, and the only people who really love the show are women who like other women. And if they are with the press then she should of had CBC identification on her so someone knows who they are. I think that ford’s reaction was understandable since he had recived death threats.
Coming to someone’s private residence early in the morning in unmarked vehicles to spoof them is not cool.
A big old lady coming at you in a weird costume with a sword is not cool, either.
Who really gets the Marg Delahunty, Warrior Princess reference nowadays anyway? Why not dress up as the “Where’s The Beef?” old lady instead for all the current relevance it carries.
CBC really messed up this time – twice, and possibly three times if they don’t retract and apologize. And to think we all pay for lame attempts at humour from people that don’t have boundaries.
Ok, why am I getting a message of “This is a private video” when I attempt to view it? Who got to Toronto Life and had the video blocked?
Yes, who got to Toronto Life and had the video blocked?
“Who really gets the Marg Delahunty, Warrior Princess reference nowadays anyway? ”
YOU did!!!!!!!!!!
Love Xena, she is badsass….and NO , I a not gay. What an idiot commnet by Colin.
and the only people who really love the show are women who like other women
——————————————–
The only people? Wow you are really ignorant.
I’m pretty sure that even in the U.S. you can’t “shoot someone dead” for simply coming on your property. That would certainly put the junk mail delivery guys in mortal danger every day! Seriously, Robert Long’s comment seems to come from someone very familiar with the deep south. Time to move along Robert where you’d be more comfortable and take Mr. Ford with you. It’s a shame a sense of humour can’t be taught….
Scaring children now the CBC manna???
I can’t agree with some of the comments. let’s just lighten up, Mary Walsh is not out of line, Rob Ford needs to quit hiding behind his daughter, face it bobby, you were scarred of Mary, Now if she entered the house, that would be over the line. shame shame little bobby, you really called 911.
Rob Ford’s behaviour, was out of line, and I feel he
should seek counseling and consider resigning from his post, which is appears to stressful for him.
1. He has held “political events” at his home, with his invite of Harper a few months back.
2. He has “bragged” in past statements that everyone knows where his house is, implying the we are all welcome to come and visit this man of the the people.
3. He called 911 and then left the scene. This implies that he knew this was not an emergency. As such, he should be billed for wasting TAX PAYERS money in calling for the police without need.
If he felt this was an infringement of some kind,
as a “Mayor”, he should have smiled along with the show.
Then, he could contact CBC expressing his concern of
invasion of privacy, and/or take legal action.
His tantrum clearly indicates to me that he has no
business being the Mayor of Toronto.
Chillax people…just learn to have fun and drop your unnecessary shame hidden behind your so-called “private” property concept. It seemed to me that Rob Ford have a lot to hide and to be ashamed of – hence his extreme violent reaction.
As someone said – beware of people who have no sense of humor, especially if they are in a position of power.
If Mary Walsh came on my property, harassing me, forcing me to play along and present that I am a good sport because she has a for – profit show to film , and enters my driveway with cameras turned on, I would be inclined to spray her with the hose, spit in her face, and whack the camera with a crowbar. It would not be a happy cheery fun light chilling moment for this ambusher. I would very much like Mary Walsh to publish both her home phone number and address so some similar show can ambush her with cameras on about her recent attack on Rob Ford. Not a damn thing funny about it.
Mary should gracefully and publicly apologize to Rob Ford and anyone who was involved in this story for her setting all the events in play by her actions that she did and take full responsibility. Anything less will hurt her career.
What almost every one misses and almost no one says on every message board is that this type of ambush is only tolerable and acceptable if it is happening to some other person over there. Even better if you might happen not like the target or you disapprove of them. But no one i know would want to be ambushed and filmed and put on National television and be forced to play the “good sport” with a fake smile as you are forced to “play along” so that the ambushers will not turn on you and punish your non cooperation by making you look like a humourless angry person because you want to pick and chose the moments you are on TV.
The notion that public servants or celebrities are “fair game” for any hostile shenanigans by anybody with a camera is appalling and is a flawed idea.
Wow. I can’t believe the venom being posted here. I had to double-check because I thought I’d inadvertently stumbled into some fundie site. Metler, I’m sorry that you seem to take such delight in the thought of spitting in someone’s face. You must feel awful. It obviously touched a nerve. Remember, your doctor can help — therapy does work.
@ Alex, your comment and mary washes actions = standard Torontonian covert hostility with a “lol” or a “:-)” at the end but just as harmful and damaging to others and a standard Torontonian stab in the back, but meant to come off as clever and meant to make others look bad.
my comment = overt hostility, what I am really thinking and what I really mean and what I would really do.
Smackng somebody down (or spitting in their face or spraying them with the hose) who is disrespecting memo opinion.
Alex, you only think Mary was is ok because she ambushed some person out there but not you. I would like nothing more to send mary walsh with her cameras turned on to your or your parents or grandparents use unannounced with an agenda to make your whole family look foolish on national television.
correction: meant to say
Smackng somebody down (or spitting in their face or spraying them with the hose) who is disrespecting me to my face in PUBLIC with cameras turned on and intent on making me look foolish to the country to harm my reputation, is appropriate and called for IMO.
@Alex
How about the rest of what I said? I said much more than just spitting in another persons face.
melter sure seems to have a lot of time on her hands.
@ mattagascar, you also seem to have a bit of time on your hands.
For-profit so called “news” and media and entertainment shows hijacking of individuals is my # 1 pet peeve. Can’t stand that there is a group who is permitted to capture others images without there content and publish time on TV or in magazines or newspapers. I would not want to be ambushed by paparazzi or Mary Walsh nor do I want it down to my worst enemy.
The only citizens I would whole heartedly advocate deserving of being ambushed would be the ambushers themselves. I would have no problem to have paparazzo stalking paparazzi and Mary washes ambushing the Mary Walshes. I would love to see the staff of CNN , TMZ, 22 Minutes and the media become the targets of their type of “news” coverage and entertainment. let have CNN staff on the “Rediculist” every single night.
Metler you sir are an idiot. spitting is called for wtf?
I don’t disagree that I might be an idiot. I very well may be and spitting may not be called for, but if Mary Walsh or some paparazzi goon or staff of TMZ with cameras turned on pointed at me enter my private property, with the intent of pun king me or filming me without my consent, I will react any way I damn well feel like and it will not be nice and neat or with the intent of showing I am a “good sport” or playing along with a smile on my face. My response will have the character of overt direct sudden hostility to it.
That citizens tolerate this kind of conduct by for profit media agents like Mary Walsh is shocking to me. Sheep mentality not a good sense of humour.
Who amongst us would, out of the blue, early in the morning, enter some stranger’s property in the suburb’s, with a camera man standing behind us filming, and commence to ridicule, badger and harass the stranger at their cars?
Would we not expect a harsh negative reaction as a result of our attempted ambush? Would we be so completely dumbfounded and shocked that our ambushing a stranger was perceived as a threat by them? Really?
How many properties and front doors did Rob Ford barge onto unannounced and unwanted when he was campaigning? If I was a little girl I would be more afraid of the big man with the arrogant smile and empty promises, than I would be of the warrior princess. So he can ply his trade on someones front driveway, but she can’t?
@ lynn, It would never happen. People who are campaigning do not brag that they are “ambushing” you and approach your front door with a camera person also behind them pointing a camera at you without your consent, to later broadcast it on National television. If Mary Walsh by herself just politely approached Rob Ford on his driveway, then your comparison might work. But that was not the case.
And Lynn to answer your question:
“How many properties and front doors did Rob Ford barge onto unannounced and unwanted when he was campaigning? ”
The answer is none. People do not “barge” nor do they “barge” unannounced when they are campaigning. They knock. And politely face people, person to person. It is not an “ambush”. “Barging” would get the police called and loose votes.
The CBC gig could have been turned in to something positive for Ford had he gone along with the joke.
He has no sense of humor that is quite evident here.
He prefers to be a jerk I guess.
All these knobs defending him regardless how stupid he acts is of more concern here.
Somewere along the road even these dopes who elected this guy have to call him out on his behavior and get him to try and behave like a Mayor and stop embarrassing this city.
Mary Walsh is just crude and vulgar. So can be any teenage punk. She works in mass media, of course.
As if Rob Ford had anything to be genuinely concerned about! One second of rational thought would have concluded that he had a fantastic opportunity to get into some clever back and forth with Marg, and come off as nothing more than a seasoned professional politician who is capable of handling the pressures of public office.
Sadly, Ford has yet to prove himself to be either clever, or a seasoned professional politician and so he chose instead to run inside his house and swear at a 911 operator because he was included in a piece of political satire.
Oh well, at least this has given something for the Hillbilly contingent of Toronto life readers to unite on – their shared love of gun-toting, dog attacking solutions to non-violent free speech.
