Turns out that overhauling Canada’s busiest transit hub is both tricky and expensive. The price tag on the six-year Union Station revamp—which will add capacity, a massive glass atrium and an underground retail concourse—has risen by a whopping $80 million, according to the latest city report. Staff are pointing the finger at a few different factors: a lack of information about the station’s condition; extra heritage restoration; and, of course, the complexities of keeping Canada’s busiest transit hub open for 250,000 passengers daily while carving out the entire basement.
