Torontonians love to complain about every costly entity from real estate to Ticketmaster, but according to the most recent Mercer Cost of Living Survey, Hogtown is cheap compared to most big cities. Toronto was ranked 78th in the survey of over 214 cities across five continents. It measured expenses on over 200 items like housing, transport, food, clothing and entertainment. Urban centres in East Asia and Africa figured prominently on the list, with Luanda, Angola taking the top spot followed by Tokyo, Japan and N’Djamena, Chad. Toronto came in well behind two of its main North American counterparts New York (27) and Los Angeles (55) as well as Vancouver (75). Montreal trailed at 98 and Ottawa at 136.
