Toronto named possible escape destination for Americans unhappy with today’s election

The U.S. midterm elections are going down today, and lefties are paranoid as the Democrats brace for huge losses. Case in point: Gawker, the gossip and news blog, is so paranoid that hyper-conservatives with strong support from the Tea Party movement might win big that it is naming Canada as a viable place of refuge. Among the five foreign cities it suggests escaping to should the U.S. be overtaken by Bible-thumping, chastity-vowing right-wingers are Vancouver and Toronto—but no Montreal.

Paris, Stockholm and Buenos Aires rounded out the list, but Toronto took the cake for being “reasonably liberal,” “safe-ish” and an “ethnic hub.” We’re also the biggest city “up there,” which we assume means in the Arctic. Gawker notes that we have a Tory PM but doesn’t bother mentioning that our new mayor is a hyper-conservative. (Both lack the sex appeal of Sarah Palin and Christine O’Donnell, but who’s keeping track?)

Still, we’re not going to shy away from gloating when our city gets international attention. After all, according to Gawker, we have “a weird inferiority complex.”
