Ten things Mitchell Goldhar could have bought the Leafs instead of Paul Henderson’s jersey

After hearing that Toronto real estate mogul Mitchell Goldhar paid $1.2 million at auction for Paul Henderson‘s iconic 1972 Team Canada jersey, we couldn’t stop ourselves from speculating what else Goldhar could have bought for that amount to support his favourite sport. Instead of indulging in hockey nostalgia, it might have been more fruitful to help out local losers the Toronto Maple Leafs. Here, a few things $1.2 million could have bought for our Hogtown hockey team.
- 11 games with Sidney Crosby.
- A chance to coax Scott Niedermayer out of retirement at 20 per cent of his old salary.
- 1/6 of a Sedin twin.
- Jonathan Toews at his current salary—with $350,000 change, no less. That is, assuming he’d leave the Stanley Cup–winning Blackhawks.
- Pat Quinn. We figure he could use the job since he just got sacked by the Oilers.
- 3,000 autographed Jarome Iginla hockey sticks. We hope he’s signed that many.
- 6 refs to bribe.
- 5 jet packs. If there’s no rule for them, they can’t be illegal.
- 1.2 million loonies they can stuff under the ice for good luck.
- 4 Wayne Gretzky jerseys. You know, for inspiration.
