TCHC entangled in another lawsuit, only this time it’s not the one getting sued

Toronto Community Housing is involved in a new class action lawsuit and, just to keep things interesting, they’re actually the ones doing the suing. Still embroiled in the suit brought by residents of 200 Wellesley following last September’s fire, the TCHC is now part of a class seeking $30 million from a company that manufactured flawed elevator-braking systems. We were initially enticed by the potential of TCHC making a grab for some cash to ease the strain of their multi-million dollar repair backlog, but it turns out the corporation is really just trying to cover their losses. TCHC spokesperson Jeffrey Ferrier told us that they’re attempting to cover the cost of replacing 169 sheave jammers (which works out to roughly $2 million). Still, broken elevators are a constant problem for long-suffering TCHC residents—we’re glad to hear housing is going to bat for its tenants. Read the entire story [Toronto Star] »
