T.O. cops investigating Roger Clemens for FBI; Canada finally involved in international drug scandal that doesn’t involve Marc Emery
Though the Blue Jays have had some trouble grabbing the attention of Torontonians lately, the baseball club did manage to get the attention of certain Americans—namely, the ones who work for the FBI. Toronto Police have been asked by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation to look into the history of former Jays pitcher Roger Clemens after he claimed that he’d never used steroids or human growth hormone.
The CBC broke the story this morning:
Toronto police demanded medical records and concrete documentary evidence during their recent visits to the Blue Jays head office as U.S. prosecutors try to sort out a major-league “he said, he said” involving Clemens and his former trainer.
Police presented the Jays with a court order asking for specific items, including blood test results, MRI records, photos and evidence related to Clemens’ health issues during his time with the team.
Clemens, whose performance lagged for several years, was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays and played for two seasons in 1997 and 1998. During this period his winning statistics skyrocketed, fetching him two back-to-back Cy Young awards.
Looks like being exiled to Toronto was such a shock for the Texas-raised pitcher that he may have resorted to performance-enhancing drugs. Of course, Clemens isn’t being nailed for using steroids while playing pro baseball, but for possibly perjuring himself before Congress. Testimony given by Clemens directly contradicts that of his trainer, which is why the FBI is bothering to call Toronto cops.
Used to be that if a Canadian city wanted to get involved in a big-time drug scandal, it had to be Vancouver (doing things like holding rallies to keep Marc Emery in British Columbia). As for Clemens, we’re not worried. We’re sure Conrad Black can tell him where they keep the good books in the prison library.
