Ronaldinho, one of the most iconic footballers the world has ever seen, is playing in Toronto this week. The Brazilian—who is one of just 10 players to ever win the World Cup, the Champions League and the Ballon d’Or—is in town headlining North America’s inaugural Living Legends match at BMO Field on Friday, May 8.

Other superstars of yore such as Adriano and Maicon will play alongside Ronaldinho on the Brazil Legends team as they take on the Toronto FC Legends, featuring Sebastian Giovinco, Dwayne De Rosario, Steven Caldwell and more.

“We want to bring happiness to the ones there at the stadium,” Ronaldinho told the media yesterday. “We’re very happy to see all the fans, a full stadium where the World Cup will be hosted, and we’re so proud to be here.”

While Caldwell teased that the competitive juices will get flowing once the match kicks off at 7 p.m. tonight, Ronaldinho said he hopes for a friendly match, joking that he and Adriano are too old for anything more aggressive.

Ronaldinho also recalled his previous visits to Toronto, which have included stops in midtown’s Little Brazil and a Raptors game. “Every time I come here, everybody wants to show the culture,” he said. “I have a lot of friends here, and they’re always excited to take me out to eat.”

Giovinco—an MLS MVP who is widely regarded as the greatest player in Toronto FC history—recalled first joining the club in 2015, when just 10,000 fans would attend games at BMO Field. By contrast, he said, when Toronto hosted the final in 2016, the team packed over 30,000 people into the stands.

Now, having made a home in Toronto, Giovinco couldn’t be happier that the World Cup is coming to the city. “It’s amazing,” he said. “It’s the best competition that this sport has, so hosting the game here will bring people lots of excitement.”
