Rob Ford’s first international excursion acting in his capacity as Toronto mayor went pretty smoothly. Ford was in Guadalajara, Mexico, over the weekend to take part in the closing ceremonies of the Pan American Games and receive the Games’ flag on behalf of Ontario (which is hosting the event in 2015). The Toronto Star’s sources say Ford was nervous about appearing in front of 50,000 people (roughly the attendance at the last all-night executive committee meeting); there was even some earlier concern that he might not attend. But with the Toronto edition of the Games set to cost more than 10 times Guadalajara’s, it’s probably a good thing the city’s top executive made an appearance.
