Dalton McGuinty tries to sweet talk supreme ruler and lord of the suburbs, Hazel McCallion

Dalton McGuinty is reaching out to Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion for a bit of suburban support. McCallion hasn’t officially endorsed the Liberals, but she was sitting in the front row at their campaign launch, where McGuinty called the long (long, long)–serving mayor “fabulous.” Of course, the Liberals aren’t the only ones looking for a little municipal love: McCallion’s stop at the Liberal launch comes just days after PC leader Tim Hudak met with Rob Ford at Ford Fest. In both cases, we enjoyed watching the people usually forced to beg Queen’s Park for more money wield a bit of power for a change—even if it’s just star power. In McCallion’s case, there’s even an added element of political intrigue, given that she has seen her star fade ever so slightly in recent years. Then again, it’s tough to argue with the influence of a mayor who has been in charge since her city was nothing more than a strip mall and a hitching post. Read the entire story [Globe and Mail] »
