Nestled on University Avenue’s prestigious thoroughfare, there’s a striking architectural gem that only an exclusive group of members can truly relish. Welcome to the University Club of Toronto, where old-world charm meets modern hospitality.

Legacy of excellence

This private club in the heart of downtown has been a distinguished part of the city’s social scene since 1906. As membership thrived and expanded, it occupied a number of sites before moving to its current location, 380 University Avenue, in 1929. Designed by the architects Mathers and Haldenby, the clubhouse is celebrated as one of Canada’s finest neoclassical buildings, earning heritage status in 1978.

Predating the First World War and playing host to some of the greatest Canadian minds of the last century, including Bill Withrow, Bobby Laidlaw, Captain Stan Biggs, Conn Smythe, Dr. Jock Maynard and the Honourable Peter deCarteret Cory, this vibrant retreat is home to a flourishing network of like-minded individuals who enjoy the finer things in life.

Elevated experience

Stepping into its grand marble lobby, there’s a warm and inviting atmosphere brimming with sophistication and class. Chic 1920s design elements, including gold gilding and pilaster columns, are juxtaposed with cozy modern decor.

In the warm, Canadiana-inspired members’ lounge, unwind by the antique wood-burning fireplace and find inspiration admiring artwork by Ben Woolfitt, Charles Pachter, Douglas Coupland and renowned Group of Seven painters—most notably Lawren Harris, who was one of the original members of the club.

The elegant bar offers an extensive selection of top-tier spirits, handcrafted cocktails and wines from its treasured 3,500-plus private collection, showcasing a plethora of top-tier Ontario producers and vintages from around the world—all curated exclusively for members by the club’s in-house sommelier. Future upgrades to the club will include updated co-working spaces, a wine tasting bar and a chic new dining room accented by the Group of Seven collection.

The opulent library dining room offers an array of ever-changing contemporary dishes for lunch and dinner, created by the club’s dedicated culinary team. From small-plate delicacies like tartare and escargot to succulent mains like steak and prime rib, there’s no shortage of praise-worthy cuisine.

In addition to year-round dining, members have an open-ended invitation to one-of-a-kind food and beverage experiences featuring renowned chefs and local distillers and wine producers. In the warmer months, sip a cold beverage and snack on gourmet bites while surveying passersby from the new street-level patio, which is surprisingly secluded, given its bustling location.

Upstairs, there are 12 bright, thoughtfully designed bedroom suites, each named for a Group of Seven member, which are available exclusively for members and their guests looking for accommodations in a prime downtown location. From laid back to luxe, there’s a space to suit every need, whether relaxing after work, planning a wedding or hosting a corporate function.

Sophisticated social scene

The membership base is growing steadily, especially among the 35- to 45-year-old demographic, and club offerings are uniquely tailored to their interests. A monthly program of events and speakers—spotlighting everything from music, theatre and visual arts to business, politics and the law—aims to capture their interests and imagination. Members enjoy 24-7 access to a boutique gym and fitness centre, which includes everything from state-of-the-art cardio equipment and weights to a golf practice facility and squash court.
