Some of Toronto’s inside workers accepted the city’s offer, making Doug Holyday sort of right

Doug Holyday was half-right (or half-wrong, we guess)—the deputy mayor had predicted that Toronto’s inside workers would accept the city’s final offer or else, but yesterday only two of the union’s four bargaining units voted in favour of the contract. CUPE Local 79’s long-term care workers and part-time recreation workers both rejected the offer, which, of course, has prompted rumblings of a strike. Sounding pretty bad-ass, union president Tim Maguire once again warned that imposing a contract could lead to a work stoppage, saying, “We think the city should think very carefully about going down that road.” Holyday says the city is still plotting its next move, which could be to impose the contract, go to arbitration or just trudge on back to the bargaining table.
