Giorgio Mammoliti proves relevance with super-tall phallic symbol and “Dundas Square of the North”

Fresh off his bold diagnosis of rival Joe Pantalone’s irrelevance, Giorgio Mammoliti is proud to announce that his vision of Dundas Square North—a flashy version of Emery Village at Finch and Weston—has just taken one step toward fruition: local businesses in his ward have agreed to pay for a giant $3.5-million pole that will hold a flag big enough to be seen from Barrie. While proud of this developing project, Mammoliti makes it clear that the city will have nothing to do with the square. We’re assuming he’s eager to show he can work around city bureaucracy, but he comes off sounding a bit disdainful, as in this quote from the Post:

What’s true and what I can speak of right now is that no funds from city hall will be asked for. It’s the business community that’s doing all this; it’s not the city. It’s going to be the business community that cleans it, that pulls out the weeds, that pays for all the statues.

Note, too, that the sense of excitement over the statues and such was not universal. We can’t help but feel for the business owner who responded, “You’ve got one of the largest industrial neighbourhoods in the city, and yet he’s trying to convince people this can become a tourist destination… Particularly as an industrial business owner, I could care less about tourists.”

If any of those statues are of Mammoliti, they may have to wait.
