Friday’s Luminato Picks: Sargasso, k.d. lang and Vodavil

The fifth edition of Luminato, the city’s annual everything-culture fest, kicked off last Friday and goes all through the week. Here, three events to check out today.

1.   Art—Sargasso (FREE!)
Today’s the last full day to see Philip Beesley’s sweeping, achingly romantic installation in the atrium of the Brookfield Galleria before it’s dissembled tomorrow at noon. In Sargasso, the architect, artist and University of Waterloo professor—who won the people’s choice award for his Aurora installation at last fall’s Nuit Blanche—has suspended an enormous network of mylar, acrylic and metal components that defy their industrial origins to float into a soft, billowing cumulus cloud of ephemera. All day. Until June 18. Allen Lambert Galleria, Brookfield Place, 181 Bay St., 416-368-4849, luminato.com/2011/sargasso.

2.   Music—k.d. lang and The Siss Boom Bang (FREE!)
After spending the last few years recording jazz standards and covers, Canada’s modern-day Patsy Cline has returned to her country roots with her latest album, Sing it Loud, a collection of twangy torch songs. Tonight, the barefoot chanteuse is joined onstage by The Siss Boom Bang, a backup band that includes Nashville session man Lex Price, Fred Eltringham of The Wallflowers and Guster’s Joe Pisapia. 8 p.m. David Pecaut Square, 55 John St., 416-368-3839, luminato.com/2011/kdlang.

3.   Entertainment—Vodavil
An evening thoroughly devoted to the madcap awaits you in this tribute to the art of vaudeville. Like the classic vaudeville acts that filled concert halls at the turn of the century, Vodavil’s performers—including Mike Caveney, Tina Lener, Ardan James, Gaëtan Bloom and The Great Tomsoni and Company—fuse magic, comedy, mime, music and more in this slightly absurdist old-fashioned revue. June 17 and 18. 8 p.m. $41.50–$51.50. Winter Garden Theatre, 189 Yonge St., 416-368-4849, luminato.com/2011/vodavil.
