A bit of news from earlier this week seems almost too ridiculous to believe—and provides ample material for some pretty awful jokes. The National Post reports that a group of chilly journalists learned yesterday that in order to save money, the city hasn’t turned on the steam system that heats city hall (apparently, the temperature reached a low of 14°C in the press gallery—whining ensued). Looks like Rob Ford may not be content with simply freezing property taxes. Zing! We’re actually not sure if the decision to keep the heat off came directly from Ford, but it does sound like his kind of math. Say, a few extra weeks without heat equals a property tax freeze plus a cancelled vehicle registration tax? The city probably isn’t much closer to filling the yawning budget gap, but there’s likely a vat of gravy congealing in the cold somewhere. Read the entire story [National Post] »
