CanCon couple alert: Jay Baruchel and Alison Pill are engaged

For those of you who weren’t watching the Genie Awards last night, you missed an essential tidbit of CanCon couple news: one of our favourite duos, Jay Baruchel and Alison Pill, are engaged. Needless to say, it’s exciting news, unless you were holding out for Baruchel to make it work with his former Popular Mechanics for Kids co-host, Elisha Cuthbert.

The announcement was slyly tossed into Baruchel’s acceptance speech for his fan choice award, as he thanked his mom and “fiancée, Alison.” The Star reports that Baruchel—who has starred in The Trotsky, She’s Out of My League and Judd Apatow’s Undeclared, and appeared in supporting roles in Knocked Up and Tropic Thunder—gave his lady-friend a 180-year-old Victorian wedding band for Christmas. The ring was initially supposed to be for kicks, but Baruchel changed the game at the last minute.

“I’m pretty sure my words were: ‘(Screw) it, do you want to marry me?,’” he told the Star. Pill, of Scott Pilgrim, Milk and Pillars of the Earth fame (no slouch, she’s also a Tony Award nominee), accepted.

The pair met on set of the upcoming hockey movie Goon last year, and the wedding is scheduled for September 2012. In the meantime, we’re trying to figure out what we should call the newly affianced couple. Barupill? Pilluchel? Jaylison?
